Can you make a living from selling crafts?

You definitely can make a living selling crafts.  I’ve been successfully selling handmade items online for two and a half years and making a full-time living from selling my crafts for a year and a half.  I’m actually making more money selling handmade products than I ever have in my life.

How long does it take to make a full time income selling crafts?

To make a full time income selling crafts, it takes between 3 months and 2 years.  A person’s motivation and willingness to learn and their choice of where and how to sell their crafts will determine the amount of time it takes to replace their salary from their job and make a living with a craft business.

Selling your crafts at a craft fair can be a fast way to make income, but there are costs like booth rental that can be quite expensive.  Online craft selling sites tend to have less costs associated, but it takes longer to get to the point of making a full time income in most cases due to competition and learning how to use the site properly.

How long it takes to make a full time income selling crafts is going to ultimately be up to you and how you choose to go about selling your crafts.  I was able to make a full-time income from my craft business within one year, but I could have done it faster if I would have done some things differently.  There are a few factors that play into this.  I’ll tell you the mistakes I made that held up my progress and how you can get there faster.

Here are a few things to consider and ways you can speed up the amount of time it takes you to make a full time income from your handmade business.

Where are you selling your crafts?  Are you willing to sell your handmade items on more than one platform?

The more places you sell, the more exposure you get.  You have to decide what places work for your items though.  I tried selling on Ebay and it just wasn’t a good fit for my handmade products and it didn’t feel good to me.  I love selling on Etsy and Amazon.  They both work for me and are a good fit for what I’m selling.

In the beginning I only sold on Etsy.  For almost a year I considered selling on Amazon Handmade, but I kept reading things online that discouraged me from it.  After listing my products on Amazon, I was making a full-time income within 6 weeks.  So please don’t discount other platforms or get stuck on just one.  It could change your life if you give another one a chance.

If you want to know the differences between Etsy and Amazon Handmade, I have this post that explains it all.

Are you adding new handmade products based on the trends, seasons, and holidays?

I had no idea how to find good product ideas to sell when I first started.  Because of this, I wasn’t adding new products on a regular basis or for holidays.  I finally came up with my own ways of figuring out what crafts would be good sellers for me and it made all the difference in the world in how many sales I was getting.  The thing with this is, you also get more and more products in your shop as the seasons go by each year.  If you do this year after year, you’ll have a large inventory which equals more sales.

You have to sell products that are in high demand if you want to your craft business your full time job and a comfortable income.  As I added products for each holiday coming up, I got more and more sales.  And now I can count on those sales every year during the holidays.

I created a planner for this so you can make a full time income from your craft business too.  Every business needs a plan and this will keep sales rolling in steadily for you throughout the whole year.

Are you willing to change your products up if you’re not getting the results you want?

If you’re selling bikinis, you’re going to hit a season where you aren’t making sales.  Are you going to sit there and moan about how you’re not making sales or are you willing to figure out what else you can make and sell to get you through that season?  You have to have products that will sell during every part of the year if you want to make a full time income from selling your crafts.

My first products really only sold in the fall for the most part.  I had to find things that fit into my business that I could sell throughout the whole year.  Once I did that, I had sales coming in regularly so I could depend on the amount of money coming in.

Are you promoting your craft items anywhere or just waiting for traffic from Etsy, Amazon, etc.?

Sending traffic to your shops from other sources will help you make more sales and also show Etsy or Amazon that you’re doing your part to bring in customers to their platform.  Use any social medias that you enjoy.  Try Pinterest for pinning your products.  I particularly like Pinterest because the pins live on there forever.  So your product can be found for years and years.
