Starting a handmade business is a fun and exciting adventure, but it takes dedication and positive mindset to make it work.  You might wonder if you have the qualities it takes to be successful with your craft business.  I’ve got you covered!  Here are 5 signs your handmade business will be successful.

If you don’t have all of these qualities, don’t worry.  You can always change the way you think and run your business.

How do I know if my handmade business will succeed?

Failure is not an option for you.

If your shop is going to be successful, you have to DECIDE that you’re going to succeed no matter what.  You will hit rough patches and having this mindset will allow you to keep going.  If you haven’t decided this, you’re going to be ready to give up the minute you aren’t getting any sales or if your first products don’t take off.  You’re willing to do what needs to be done without excuses.

You have confidence in yourself and your products.

You believe in yourself even when no one else does, even if people think your ideas are crazy or trying to build a business online is crazy.  You know that you can do this.  You know that your products are amazing and they’re going to help people in some way, even if it’s just putting a smile on their face.

If you need help finding products that you believe in and will sell fast, I show you step-by-step how to find the best ideas in this blog post.

You think of it as a REAL business and not just a little handmade shop.

If you think of your shop like “I’m just putting a few things up and see if they sell.”  That’s exactly how customers will see your shop too.  And you’ll get the amount of sales that go with it.

I don’t mean you have to go set up an LLC or anything like that.  You just need to treat it like you would a job rather than a hobby.  What this means will depend on you.  If you need to set regular work hours, do that.  If you need to come up with a complete business plan to make it feel like a business, do that.  Whatever makes you feel like it’s a genuine business is what you need to do to get your mind in the game and be successful.

You have a growth mindset and work on your own personal development regularly.

Journaling is a great way to expand yourself personally and professionally.  Just by journaling, I’ve learned to believe in myself more than I ever thought possible, increased my confidence, increased my income by thousands of dollars per month and improved my relationships.

Reading personal development books or watching videos on personal development are awesome ways to improve yourself.  You’re always learning from people and your own mistakes and keep going.  You always want to do better.  You’re always thinking of ways to do things better.

Your first few products may not be winners.  If you are willing to take the time to figure out what went wrong and learn how to fix it, you’ll be successful.  Even when you have products that sell, you’re thinking of how to make them better or what else to make that your customers would love.

Here are a few of my favorite personal development books to get a success mindset:

Decide to Win: Unleash Who You ARE, And Go All In to Create the Life You Want!

Get Rich, Lucky Bitch!: Release Your Money Blocks and Live a First-Class Life

Do It Scared: Finding the Courage to Face Your Fears, Overcome Adversity, and Create a Life You Love

I love listening to audio books while I make my crafts.  It’s a great way to work on my mindset while I’m working on my business.  You can get a free trial of Audible on Amazon so you can listen to these books for free while you work.

Your shop and products play on your strengths.

If you love what you’re selling and are selling things that you’re good at, it’s inevitable that success will follow.  If your shop has crafts that you enjoy making using a skill that you’ve mastered, it’s so much easier to put all of the other pieces together.

If you have a craft that you love to make, create your shop around that.  If you don’t, you can try some different crafts and see which ones are the most fun for you.

Before I started my Etsy shop, I loved making crafts but I didn’t have a particular type of craft that I made as a hobby.  I tried making hand-sewn dolls which was sort of fun, but not exactly my area of expertise.  I got a Cricut as a birthday gift and it was like all these doors opened for me.  There were so many possibilities of things I could make with it and sell, but I still had to try making different things to come up with the right product for my craft business.

How long will it take for my handmade business to be successful?

How long it takes for your craft business to be successful depends on you and how many of the above qualities you have.  If you’re dedicated to your success, refuse to fail, and are open to learning and trying new things, it could happen rather quickly.

I had a rough start in the beginning.  I wasn’t 100% sure of myself, my products, or that I would be successful.  It took me about a year to really say that I was making an income that I could live on.  How I finally was able to find that success was by starting to believe in myself, being willing to make and try to sell new products, and selling in more than one place.  It could have taken me less time, but we all have a learning process we have to go through.

Take it one day at a time and be willing to do whatever it takes for however long it takes.  Those are the keys to a successful handmade business.
