This $15 hack can turn your old appliances into beautiful stainless steel appliances. Anyone can spray paint a dishwasher stainless steel (or any other appliance). It's so easy and looks beautiful!I want to show you an easy and cheap way to spray paint a dishwasher (or any appliance) stainless steel in less than an hour!

Have you been wanting stainless steel appliances but yours work just fine?  Can’t justify spending thousands of dollars on new appliances when you have perfectly good ones already?  I’m going to show you in this tutorial how easy it is to spray paint appliances to look like real stainless steel without the hefty price tag!  You can spray paint a dishwasher stainless steel (or any other appliance)!

I was having the same problem as you.  Our dishwasher works perfectly but it was white and all of our other appliances are black and stainless steel to match our kitchen.  We considered replacing it, but it works great (which is more than I can say for some I’ve had in the past).  So I set out to find a way to make it fit in with the rest of the kitchen.

I discovered I could spray paint my dishwasher with a metallic foil paint to make it look like stainless steel and I was so excited.  It was so cheap and it looks great.  UPDATE:  We’ve had our dishwasher spray painted stainless steel for 3 years and it still looks perfect.  It’s holding up great!

The easiest and cheapest solution to getting faux stainless steel appliances!

Now I’ve seen some other solutions that I just couldn’t make work.  I tried the contact paper but it wouldn’t stay on.  Peeling appliances look worse than mismatched appliances in my opinion.  I also looked at the stainless steel appliance panels.  These stainless steel panels seemed like they’d work, but cost a bit more than I was hoping to spend.

I know you’re probably thinking it’s not going to look like the real thing, but have you seen this foil paint!?  AMAZING!!!  It’s so easy to do and the finish is just like stainless steel!  For real, no one will even know the difference.  You definitely want to use this exact one though.  There are other spray paints out there that claim to be metallic and they barely have any chrome look to them at all.  Super disappointing!

I’ve been using this paint on everything!  So far I’ve used in on my dishwasher, some old glass vases to give them a more modern look, and the emblems on our truck that were faded and needed a makeover.  I’m in love!  I had a hard time finding this locally in stores so I just ordered it from Amazon with my Prime membership.  You can get a FREE 30 Trial of Amazon Prime if you don’t already have it!

Here’s how to spray paint appliances to look like stainless steel with foil paint:

  1. The first thing you want to do is clean your appliance with a cleaner that will cut the grease.  I love TSP! It is amazing for cleaning your cabinets too!  You know how you get all the nasty gunk on your cabinet doors that you can’t figure out where it came from?  TSP will swipe that right off in an instant!  Be sure you wear gloves when working with this cleaner.
  2. After you have your appliance all clean, cover with plastic and tape off any areas that might get hit by over spray or that you don’t want painted with your foil paint.  I’m guessing you don’t want your whole kitchen stainless steel 😂.  Be sure you cover any control panels on your appliance too.  This was the worst part of the whole project for me.  I’m not a fan of taping off but I’m also not a fan of repainting the rest of my kitchen.  So a girl has to do what a girl has to do.
  3. Once everything is covered that you don’t want to spray, you’ll just do a light even coat of the foil paint, holding the can 6 to 8 inches from your appliance.  Be really careful to not hold the can too close while spraying or you’ll end up with drippy spots which are going to be challenging to fix with the metallic finish.  Keep your coats thin.  This paint dries really fast too.  Another plus in my book.  I waited about 15 minutes between coats.  I ended up doing 3 coats total to get the coverage that I wanted.

My control panel is white.  Not the perfect situation for my mostly black and stainless steel kitchen, but it looks a heck of a lot better than an all white dishwasher.  I tried painting around the control panel with black paint, but it looked silly on mine.  I’m not sure if it was because of my black cabinets and the white panel.  It just made the control panel stand out even more.  So I opted to paint the whole thing stainless and have the white panel.

That’s all there is to it!  No stainless steel appliance panels or contact paper.  Easy breezy!  This project took me less than an hour and cost less than $15 and the result is amazing!
