Easy to make DIY sign using an upcycled cabinet door and melted fabric flowers. Use this technique to make your own farmhouse fixer upper style signs.

I am so excited to share this DIY Sign tutorial with you today!  Our house is pretty large compared to any of the other homes we’ve ever lived in.  The result of that is we have tons of empty walls still.  I figured I’d better get to work filling some more of them with beautiful things since it looks pretty sad in some of the rooms.

Here’s how I made my DIY Sign!

I had this old cabinet door that I picked up at the Habitat ReStore a while back.  I hadn’t come up with any great ideas of what to do with it.  So it’s been sitting around for months.  I knew I wanted to make wall art out of it, but I couldn’t think of a design that was perfect…until today!

I love using cabinet doors as wall art for the house because the design makes them look like framed art and they come in all different sizes.  Some of the older cabinet doors can be quite fancy and turn out really amazing as a DIY  sign.  The best part is that you can pick them up for $2 or $3 used.

I painted the door black with some leftover paint we had around the house that we used to paint some cabinets. This DIY home sweet home sign with melted fabric flowers is a simple project for making a DIY wood sign. It can be made with or without a Cricut. The burned flowers are so pretty!

While that was drying, I made my design in Cricut Design Space™.  I used the font Gabriola for the “HOME” and Janda Happy Day for the word “Sweet”.  Gabriola was a font I had on my computer.  I downloaded Janda Happy Day from dafont.com (my favorite site for free fonts).  I also added some hearts that I got from the “Shapes” section in Cricut Design Space™ for free.

I cut my design out of vinyl and applied it to my cabinet door.  This is my favorite site for buying vinyl.  They have the best selection and prices.  Their printed vinyl is so cute!  I used the zebra one for this sign along with metallic and a red.

If you don’t have a Cricut, you can still make this DIY sign.  You can print out your design on paper with a printer.  Then use a pencil to color over the letters on the back side of the paper.  With the pencil side down against your wood, trace around the letters.   This will put the design on your wood door. Then you can hand paint the letters you traced.  Or you could also cut the letters out of colored paper and Mod Podge them on.

Amazing Melted Fabric Flowers For Your DIY Sign!

I wanted some flowers to put on this wood sign, but I didn’t have any on hand and I wanted to try to make some for myself.  I had some fabric left from some other projects.  So I set out to find a cool way to make fabric flowers.  I found this amazing video that shows how to make melted fabric flowers!  I looked at quite a few and this was the best and easiest tutorial for this type of flower. This is the method I used to make the flowers for my DIY sign.  Check out the video and then let’s get back to work!

I decided to experiment with a few different fabrics.  The first I used was a red polyester.  That one worked great!  I love the way it crinkled up.  Next, I tried some tulle that I had left from my sister’s bridal shower.  That one worked, but it melted quick and got holes.  It’s a very shabby look.  The last one I tried was cotton.  Don’t try this!  It caught on fire!  LOL.  The fabric needs to be a synthetic fabric.

This is the tulle. You can see how it got holes melted in it but once it’s layered, it just looks very shabby chic.

I made one where I layered the tulle and the polyster.  That one is my very favorite!  I love the dimension of the different fabric layers.  I also ended up gluing the polyester one on top of the tulle one because I liked that look much better than the tulle by itself.

This is the layered tulle and polyester. My fave!

I used a large rhinestone in the center of each of the flowers, but you could definitely use something fancier like the video shows.

The three finished flowers.

Once my flowers were all put together, I used hot glue to glue them into the corners of my sign.

If the cabinet door you have doesn’t have a ledge to use as a hanger, you can get these.  They just tap right in with a hammer.

I found the perfect spot for this in our living room over the recliner.  It fits just right.  Just what that wall needed!

I had so much fun making this DIY Sign!  It only cost me about $4 to make since I used mostly leftover items.  Where else can you get a beautiful wood sign for that price?
